![]() ![]() ![]() A brilliant and wryly humorous attack on Victorian England that is enjoying a well-deserved renaissance. Contact with the 3D world turns things on end in the stuffy class-conscious society of Flatland. – Wikipedia EntryĪ mind-boggling mathematical treatise about the inhabitants of a two-dimensional world, told from the point of view of one A Square. I was just disappointed, because Twilight is so easy to parody as it is the writers did not need to branch off of the actual story to point out how ridiculous it was. It eventually just turned into an over-the-top story of it's own and I didn't compare it to Twilight at all. I completely lost that when reading Nightlight. They have done a parody of anything and everything. ![]() The Harvard Lampoon has been around nearly 300 years and was initially modeled on the British humor magazine Punch. ![]() One of the best parts of a good parody is knowing exactly what it's making fun of as you read it. Harvard Universitys humor and satire magazine has a spoof of Twilight coming out entitled Nightlight. Once they established that it was about a girl who moves to another town to live with her dad and meets this guy at school, the plot completely branches off and has nothing to do with Twilight. Really, the only think they kept constant were a few of the characters and the setting. I just didn't find it funny largely because they didn't leave enough of it the same. ![]() ![]() ![]() Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). The ordinary unhappinesses of Gary and Sandy counterbalance the epic arc of Joan's life, and showcase Shipstead's immense talent for observation. Luckily, two marginal characters, Joan's unlovely neighbors Sandy and Gary Wheelock, make the novel infinitely richer with their ordinariness. Joan's frailty and elegance and Arslan's magnetism make everything that happens to them seem poignant, like part of a ballet. ![]() But when her son Harry's talent for dance becomes clear, Joan is thrust back unwillingly into Arslan's life. When he throws her over, the pregnant Joan marries safe and sweet Jacob, her childhood friend, and moves to California. Seeing his fearless dancing "harrows her." She helps him defect, driving the getaway car and then hiding out from the paparazzi with him in a Manhattan apartment. Joan is a ballerina straining for perfection and falling short when she meets the famous Soviet dancer Arslan Rusakov.
